A chilblain is an illness characterized by red, itchy, and painful swellings of the skin that affects mainly the ear, fingers, and toes. This occurs due to exposure to cold which causes narrowing of blood vessels and as a result of poor circulation. Chilblain is a self-limiting illness which means that it resolves itself without any treatment. Prolonged chilblain might require physician intervention.

Balmosa Chilblains Cream Active Ingredients and Their Role

  • Menthol promotes vasodilation, the opening of the blood vessels that improves blood flow and regulates body temperature.
  • Camphor is an organic compound made from a camphor tree and has applications in ointments, cream, lotions, and balms. A trial study showed increased skin blood flow as soon as camphor was applied to the skin. The same effect was seen for the application of menthol to the skin.
  • Methyl Salicylate has anti-inflammatory properties and may have a role in pain. When absorbed in the body, Methyl Salicylate can be reformed into Salicylic Acid which has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Oleoresin Capsicum is used in the formulation for pain management.

2. Boots Chilblains Cream

Boots Chilblains Cream is another choice to help with the treatment of Chilblains. This cream has two active ingredients: 

  • Eucalyptus Oil
  • Benzyl Alcohol

The main actions of the above two ingredients are: 

  • Decrease pain or discomfort caused by chilblains also has a weak, local anesthetic action
  • Improved local circulation and feeling of warmth

3. Snowfire Ointment Stick for Chilblains
