Ear Drops for Wax Removal

Ear wax build-up is a common problem that can be categorized by having itchiness, dizziness, reduced hearing, and tinnitus. There are several ear drops for wax removal that is available over-the-counter in supermarkets and pharmacies.

Options for Ear Drops Wax Removal

1. Olive Oil Ear Drops

Olive Oil Ear Dropshas a  gentle way of ear wax removal. Olive oil drops typically have extra virgin olive oil as the only ingredient. It may help to soften and loosen the ear wax. Children over 1 year old and adults can use this olive oil drops. 

If a dropper is used, patients must avoid touching the ear with the dropper. 

  • The head must be tilted that leaves the affected ear facing upwards. 
  • 2 to 3 drops must be placed inside the ear with the use of the dropper.
  • It may take up to 14 days to remove the build-up of the wax. 
  • Olive oil drops may be recommended to soften the ear wax before the removal of the wax by a doctor. 
  • This ear drop is recommended for use in pregnancy.

2. Cerumol Ear Drops 

Cerumol Ear Drops are promoted as dual-action products made to break down the ear wax fast and gently. This can be bought from supermarkets and pharmacies. This ear drop is recommended for use in children over one year of age, adults, and the elderly. Children under five years of age must have a diagnosis of ear wax problem before the treatment with Cerumol Ear Drops. Extra care must be taken when using a supplied dropper to instill the drops.

Five drops must be instilled into the ear. To reach the eardrum, keep your head tilted. Repeat the procedure twice a day for the recommended treatment duration of 3 days. Before using Cerumol Ear Drops, pregnant women should seek medical advice.

3. Sodium Bicarbonate Ear Drop

Sodium Bicarbonate Ear Drops offer an alternative and gentle treatment for ear wax removal. This softens and slowly dissolves the wax. Sodium Bicarbonate is recommended for use in adults and children over 1 year of age. Children under the age of 5 must be diagnosed with ear wax problems by a doctor. 

These eardrops come in a small bottle with a dropper. Extra care is needed when placing the drops inside the eardrum. Avoid contact between the dropper and the ear canal. Your doctor will give you instructions on how to use the drops. Follow the instructions carefully. 4. Otex Ear Drops

Otex Ear Drops contains urea hydrogen peroxide 5% as the the active ingredient. This helps remove hardened wax from the ear. Urea hydrogen peroxide breaks the ear wax into small pieces that block the ear canal. These drops come in the form of a plastic bottle with a dropper. The information leaflet of the product recommends instilling up to 5 drops into the affected ear once or twice a day to be used for 3 to 4 days. Ear drops must be left in the ear for a few minutes with the head tilted.

5. Otex Express Combi Pack 

The same instructions apply to the use of these ear drops. The added step involves the use of a bulb syringe. It is advised to: 

  • Wash the sink basin using warm water.
  • The bulb syringe must be squeezed and let re-inflate the nozzle placed inside the water. 
  • The nozzle of the bulb syringe must be placed by the opening of the ear canal.  
  • The ear canal must be rinsed with the water by squeezing the bulb.

6. Otosan Natural Ear Drops

Otosan Natural Ear Drops offer a combination of different oils which soften the hardened earwax. Also, this drop contains Propolis. It is a product that is commonly produced by bees.
