Leg Cramps Treatment

Leg Cramps are sudden and painful muscle spasm that usually affects calf as well as thigh or foot. Leg Cramps that occur at night are a common condition with increased occurrence amongst the elderly population.

Patients are typically reassured by their doctor that muscle cramps are common. Self-care advice usually includes stretching and massages of the affected area, possibly to lessen the number of attacks.

1. Quinine

Quinine comes in the form of tablets in the following drugs:

  • Quinine 200 mg Tablets
  • Quinine 300 mg Tablets
  • Quinine 300 mg Tablets

People who experience severe leg cramps regularly may be recommended Quinine for leg cramps temporarily. If suitable, a recommended 4-week trial with this medication for leg cramps is started.

The recommended daily dosage for leg cramps is 200 mg to 300 mg before going to bed. The treatment is stopped if there is improvement in symptom control is attained during 4 weeks of the treatment. Patients who benefit from taking Quinine will continue to take it for 3 months with clinician reviews to follow every 3 months.

Possible Side Effects

  • Bleeding or bruising more easily such as nose bleeds, an increased total of sore throat, or other infection episodes.
  • Cinchonism with symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal pain, and changes to the vision, feeling or being sick, headaches, or irregular heartbeats.
  • Soreness of the nose,  mouth, or eyes, and skin rash
  • Allergic reactions (itchy skin, swelling of the tongue, throat, or lips)

2. Tonic Water

Tonic Water contains Quinine with a limit of no more than 83 mg per 1 liter. The recommended dosage for this is 200 mg to 300 mg for the treatment of leg cramps.

3. Magnesium for Leg Cramps

Magnesium supplements have been studied as a potential candidate for muscle cramps. This helps lessen the episodes and severity of cramps. Lindens Magnesium is a best-selling magnesium product. It is a supplement sold to improve muscle function and reduction of tiredness and fatigue.  

4. No Cramps

This is a French-made product that contains:

  • Quinquina 
  • Arnica 
  • Ginseng 
  • Vitamin B6
  • Magnesium

This helps relieve your leg cramps because of the interesting combination of ingredients.

5. Crampex

Crampex is the only over-the-counter medicine recommended for night muscle cramps. This contains the following:

  • Nicotinic Acid 20mg – Vitamin B3
  • Calcium Gluconate 200 mg – Calcium
  • Cholecalciferol 0.02 mg – Vitamin D3

Even though around 2016, Crampex has been withdrawn from the market and it has not been back since. Three active ingredients found in Crampex are available as separate supplements from a variety of places.
