Ranitidine is in the class of medications known as H2-receptor antagonists or commonly called H2-blockers. This medication is over-the-counter and prescription-only which can be used as an alternative to Ranitidine belong to one of the following groups:


An antacid provides short-term and fast relief from heartburn symptoms. This type of drug can be purchased from pharmacies, supermarkets, and retail outlets. There are several antacid products available. Antacid can be bought as chewable tablets or liquid formulation. Popular brands of antacid products include:

  • Gaviscon range of antacid products
  • Tums chewable tablets
  • Rennie range of heartburn and indigestion chewable tablets

H2-Receptor Antagonist

In the UK, Ranitidine is the only H2-receptor antagonist available over-the-counter. All Ranitidine products available for the public to buy contains 75 mg of Ranitidine each tablet.

Proton Pump Inhibitors 

PPIs are more effective in decreasing acid production than H2-receptor antagonists such as Ranitidine. On the other hand, they are linked with the risk of more common side effects and several possible interactions with other drugs. Every over-the-counter PPI has the same license and recommendation on the duration of treatment:

  • All PPIs are recommended for use in adults aged 18 years and over
  • All PPIs are commonly used in the short-term management of acid reflux or heartburn.
  • If symptoms do not resolve within 14 days of the treatment with over-the-counter PPIs, patients are recommended to discuss it with their doctor.
  • Several patients may need to take the medication for 2 to 3 days before improvement in symptoms is seen. However, certain patients may experience relief from symptoms on the first day.

Esomeprazole Products Alternative to Ranitidine

Nexium Control contains 20 mg of Esomeprazole as an active ingredient. A single dose of this can settle the symptoms of heartburn for up to 24 hours. This comes in the form of tablets and capsules, available in two different pack sizes of 7 and 14 tablets.

Guardium Acid Reflux Control

Guardium Acid Reflux Control also contains Esomeprazole as an active ingredient. In the UK, it is the latest addition of products that contain Esomeprazole available without a prescription. Guardium Acid Reflux Control is used in the symptomatic management of heartburn.

 Galpharm Esomeprazole

Galpharm Esomeprazole offers one of the cheapest options when it comes to PPIs. This comes in two different pack sizes: 14 capsules and 7 capsules.

Omeprazole as an Alternative to Ranitidine

Omeprazole 10mg Gastro-Resistant Tablets

Omeprazole is available as pharmacy-only medicine in the form of 10 mg gastro-resistant tablets. The recommended dose for this medication is 20 mg every day to be taken for up to 14 days.

Pyrocalm Control

Each Pyrocalm Control tablet contains 20 mg of Omeprazole. This medicine was launched in 2019, and it is still a relatively new product. Pyrocalm Control comes in two box sizes with 7 or 14 tablets.

Pantoloc Control

Pantoloc Controlcontains 20 mg of Pantoprazole each tablet. This drug is also classified as PPI. This is sold in two box sizes of 7 and 14 tablets. The recommended dose is one tablet per day which is 20 mg of Pantoprazole daily.
