A Seizure Medication and How Does It Work

Clonazepam is indicated to prevent and control seizures. This medication is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug. This may also be used to treat panic attacks and anxiety. This belongs to the class of medications called benzodiazepines. Clonazepam is often offered referred to as sedatives or tranquilizers due to its sedating, calming, and tranquilizing effect. Clonazepam is quickly and absorbed after oral administration. It is believed to be related to its ability to enhance the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Which, is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. This medication helps to calm your nerves and brain.

Clonazepam for Restless Leg Syndrome

Clonazepam belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines. This is usually used to treat epilepsy but can also be used to treat the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome. This is due to its muscle relaxing activity. Clonazepam causes a calming effect on the brain which may help to control body movements. This action can help to reduce the severity of symptoms.

Restless Leg Syndrome is an unpleasant or uncomfortable twitching in the legs. Symptoms also rarely occur in the arms or other parts of the body. To be categorized as Restless Leg Syndrome, symptoms should worsen when you rest or when you’re inactive, worsen in the evening or nighttime, and improve when you move or walk. About 10% of people in the United States have Restless Leg Syndrome and this syndrome is more common in women. Most people with Restless Leg Syndrome are middle-aged or older, but children can also have the condition. Restless Leg Syndrome usually goes unrecognized or misdiagnosed for years.

There is no cure for Restless Leg Syndrome, but you can lessen your discomfort and sleep disturbances. You can also greatly improve your quality of life. The aim is to decrease your symptoms.

Symptoms can be recurrent or chronic. They may range from mild to incapacitating. Several patients may experience significant restlessness and difficulty falling asleep which causes sleep deprivation. There is no medical test to diagnose Restless Leg Syndrome. The diagnosis is made based on the medical history. At times, blood work is used or another testing to rule out other medical conditions. In patients with more chronic or severe symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome, prescription drugs may be vital. The same medicine may not be helpful for all patients and a certain medicine may primarily be helpful but become less effective over time. All medicines have possible side effects and must be used only under the supervision of a doctor in the treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome. 

For the treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome, Clonazepam must be taken once a day just before bedtime. Each dose can be taken with or without food. Keep taking the medicine until your doctor tells you otherwise. Stopping suddenly can cause complications and your doctor will want you to decrease your dosage slowly if you need to stop treatment.
